The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2). It is necessary to monitor the severity of Covid 19 and its effects to take immediate action for an effective early intervention that can reduce adverse effects of severe disease. While RT-PCR determines the current presence or absence of the virus, the COVID-19 specific blood tests can help your doctor determine the severity, and thereupon the treatment for the same.

The inflammatory markers are a set of biomarkers that are used clinically to assess a patient for:

  • Presence/absence of an active inflammatory disease process
  • Activity of a known disease

Inflammatory markers can detect inflammation in the body, caused by many diseases including infections, auto-immune conditions and cancers.

C-Reactive Protein CRP

CRP test is a blood test that determines the level of C-Reactive Protein in the blood produced by the liver. Levels of the CRP have shown to be increased in response to an infection like COVID-19 and hence, can help doctors to monitor the treatment response in recently infected or recovering patients.

Complete Blood Picture (CBC)

CBC test is a group test of analysing all the components of a blood cell, investigating morphology, number and maturity in a certain blood volume. It has been found in recent studies that lower counts of lymphocytes (lymph forming cell) and eosinophils (White Blood cell) are indicative of prolonged COVID-19 infection.

Ferritin is the prime iron storehouse protein in the blood and its levels are measured by the Ferritin test. The role of iron metabolism appears to be involved in COVID infection, contributing to cytokine storms (exhibited in fatal cases of COVID-19)

Lactate Dehydrogenase Enzyme (LDH)

An LDH test measures the amount of Lactate Dehydrogenase Enzyme, responsible for energy building in the body. Recently, elevated levels of LDH are seen in Covid patients which shows an active infection and its severity of tissue damage.

D-Dimer Test

D-dimer test is useful to measure and assess clot formation, as it measures the level of D-Dimer protein formed post blood clotting. Elevated D-dimer levels have shown to be associated with COVID 19 severity.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6)

IL-6 is a very potent pro-inflammatory cytokine produced by certain immune cells during inflammation or tissue injury. In recent studies, it is actively found in Covid-19 patients which has led to severe inflammatory problems.

Liver Function Test (LFT)

Hepatic panels aka LFT are a group of blood tests that provide information about the state of a patient's liver. It covers ALT/SGPT, AST/SGOT, Bilirubin and Alkaline Phosphatase etc. A regular normal healthy liver is considered to respond better to drugs used in treatment, as it helps in metabolising them.

Test is performed on a blood sample. No preparation is needed.
