Celebrating Their Resilience — World Autism Awareness Day
World Autism Awareness Day is observed on 2 April every year. It is a day to celebrate the resilience, strengths, and unique perspectives of individuals on the autism spectrum — and to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and advocate for inclusive support systems.
At MapmyGenome, we are proud to support families navigating Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through genetic counselling, genetic testing, and education. Every individual with ASD has a unique profile of strengths and challenges — and every family deserves access to expert, compassionate guidance.
Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder
ASD is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterised by differences in social communication, sensory processing, and patterns of behaviour. It is called a “spectrum” because it encompasses a wide range of presentations — from highly independent individuals to those requiring significant daily support.
The Genetics of ASD
ASD has a strong genetic component, with heritability estimates of 64–91%. Hundreds of genes and gene variants contribute to ASD risk, including de novo mutations in SHANK3, NRXN1, and CNTNAP2, and copy number variants (CNVs) detected by chromosomal microarray. Genetic testing can provide a diagnosis in approximately 15–20% of ASD cases — helping families understand the cause, assess recurrence risk, and access targeted support.
