Discover the Ancient Practice of Yoga and Its Modern Genetic Connections - Mapmygenome

Yoga, the ancient Indian practice that harmonizes mind and body, has taken the world by storm. From studios in bustling cities to serene retreats, yoga's popularity shows no signs of slowing down. But what exactly is yoga, where did it come from, and how does it relate to the cutting-edge field of genetic testing?

The Origins of Yoga

Yoga's roots stretch back thousands of years to ancient India, believed to have emerged from the Indus-Sarasvati civilization around 3000 BCE. Originally a spiritual discipline, yoga combines physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation (dhyana), and ethical principles (yamas and niyamas).

The Science of Yoga

Modern science is catching up to what yogis have known for centuries. Studies have linked regular yoga practice to reduced stress and anxiety (by activating the parasympathetic nervous system), improved flexibility and strength, enhanced cardiovascular health, pain management for conditions like back pain and arthritis, and better sleep quality.

Yoga and Genetics: A Fascinating Connection

Could our genes influence how we respond to yoga? This is an exciting area of emerging research. Imagine a future where personalized yoga recommendations are based on your unique genetic makeup — perhaps certain asanas are more beneficial for you, or specific breathing techniques align better with your physiology. Genomepatri by MapmyGenome can reveal your genetic predispositions to stress, inflammation, muscle recovery, and more — insights that can help you tailor your yoga practice today.

International Yoga Day

The United Nations declared June 21st as International Yoga Day in 2014, recognizing yoga's holistic approach to well-being, its universal appeal across cultural and religious boundaries, and its promotion of harmony and peaceful coexistence.

The photo above doesn’t match the pose Tadasana. Tadasana is the basic standing asana on which many other poses are founded. The feet are together and the hands are at the sides of the body. The posture is entered by standing with the feet together, grounding evenly through the feet and lifting up through the crown of the head. The thighs are lifted, the waist is lifted, and the spine is elongated. The breathing is relaxed, It is used in some schools of yoga in between other poses, to allow the body and consciousness to integrate the experience of the preceding asana and to prepare for the next.
