MapmyGenome and KFRC, KIMS Launch Oncomap with Cancer Genetic Counselling
Hyderabad, India — February 5, 2014: MapmyGenome and KIMS Foundation & Research Center (KFRC) launched Oncomap™ — a DNA-based hereditary cancer risk test — alongside cancer genetic counselling services on February 4, 2014, as a World Cancer Day initiative.
“The initiative aims to take Oncomap and genetic counselling closer to people, helping them understand the need for early screening in cancer.” — Anu Acharya, CEO, MapmyGenome
What Is Oncomap™?
Oncomap™ is a simple DNA-based test that evaluates an individual’s genetic predisposition to over 15 types of cancers and common lifestyle traits. It is designed to identify hereditary cancer risk so individuals and their families can take preventive action before a diagnosis occurs.
The Role of Cancer Genetic Counselling
“Genetic counselling for cancers involves assessment of cancer genetic risk in the family members of cancer patients. Predictive genetic testing of hereditary cancers in family members must be followed by genetic counselling to understand the implications of the test report and their lifetime risk of cancer. This in turn will help to develop a customised follow-up surveillance plan for early detection and treatment.” — Dr Risha Nahar Lulla, Genetic Counsellor & Scientist, KFRC
