Restless legs syndrome overview

Restless Legs Syndrome: A Restless Experience

RLS stands for Restless Legs Syndrome (also known as Willis-Ekbom’s Syndrome) — a condition related to the nervous system that causes an irresistible urge to move or shake your legs. Affected people have uncomfortable sensations on their legs — pins and needles, a sharp itch — that force them to move. This is not just during the day; it interferes with sleep as well, making RLS one of the primary causes of disturbed sleep cycles.

How Common Is RLS?

Studies say that 6% of the global population (both male and female) is affected by RLS. A study in the Indian population revealed a prevalence rate of 2.1% in the South Indian urban population. Although the condition affects both sexes, it is more common in females. In certain individuals, it is known to stem during pregnancy.

What Causes RLS?

Causes include medication side effects (antidepressants, antihistamines), chronic conditions like iron deficiency, Parkinson’s disease, and diabetes. In women, pregnancy is a common risk factor. But one of the most interesting findings is that many of us carry elements in our DNA that predispose us towards developing RLS. Genes that control limb function, limb development in the embryonic stages, and genes in different parts of the brain (like the hippocampus) are partly responsible. Having a family history of RLS can increase your risk three to seven times.
