Test OK Please? What, When, and Where of COVID Testing

As COVID-19 spread across India and the world, one of the most common questions was: Should I get tested? What test should I take? Where can I get tested? Here is a clear, science-based guide to COVID-19 testing.

Types of COVID-19 Tests

1. RT-PCR Test (Gold Standard)

The Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test detects the genetic material (RNA) of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It is the most accurate test for active COVID-19 infection. A nasal or throat swab is collected and sent to a certified laboratory for analysis. Results typically take 24–48 hours.

2. Rapid Antigen Test

Detects specific proteins (antigens) from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Results are available in 15–30 minutes. Less sensitive than RT-PCR — a negative result does not rule out infection if symptoms are present.

3. Antibody Test (Serology Test)

Detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Used to determine past infection or immune response to vaccination. Not suitable for diagnosing active infection.

When Should You Get Tested?

  • If you have symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell)

  • If you have been in close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case

  • If you are required to travel and need a negative test certificate

  • If you are a healthcare worker or in a high-risk occupation

The Genetic Angle

Your genetic profile influences your susceptibility to COVID-19 and the severity of your response. Understanding your genetic immune profile — including your risk for cytokine storm, comorbidities like diabetes and hypertension, and your vitamin and mineral levels — can help you and your physician make more informed decisions about prevention and treatment.

Know Your Genetic Immune Profile

Genomepatri by MapmyGenome analyses your genetic predisposition to immune-related conditions, vitamin deficiencies, inflammatory response, and comorbidities that affect COVID-19 severity — helping you personalise your prevention and health plan.
