Vitamin and mineral absorption genetics is another key area. "I routinely see patients with vitamin D deficiency despite adequate sun exposure — and VDR variants explain why. Similarly, MTHFR variants affect folate metabolism and B12 utilization. Knowing these variants allows me to personalize supplementation rather than giving everyone the same generic recommendations."

"The gut microbiome is the missing link between genetics and nutrition," Dr. Sharma says.
