Why India Is the Diabetes Capital of the World
69.9 million by 2025, and 80 million by 2030. These are not growth targets — they are projections for the number of adults living with diabetes in India. In a joint survey by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (NCDIR), the majority of diabetic cases in India remain undiagnosed.
What the Survey Tells Us
A total of 9,721 adults were surveyed. Of the 904 found to have diabetes based on fasting blood glucose (FBG) measurement and self-reported history:
414 were aware of their diabetes status
326 were under treatment
142 were under control
The key finding: lack of awareness is the primary cause of India’s rising number of undiagnosed diabetic cases. Almost half of participants were unaware of their condition. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing complications and ensuring quality of life.

Two Simple Steps to Manage Diabetes
Awareness and prevention are the game changers. A sedentary lifestyle, dietary imbalance, and lack of physical activity are all risk factors. Regular blood tests at least once a year and monitoring risk factors can help bring down undiagnosed cases.
The Genetic Angle
Tapping into your genes is another powerful way to build awareness around preventing diabetes. Genetic testing opens up information about your risk for conditions like diabetes — and helps you create a personalised action plan. MapmyGenome’s Genomepatri and Cardiomap provide insight into your genetic predisposition to diabetes and related metabolic conditions, enabling you to personalise a health plan that suits you best.
Post a genetic counselling session, the report can effectively be used to alter your lifestyle according to your genetic requirements. Your physician, dietitian, or fitness trainer can help you adapt to that lifestyle by outlining further steps.
Know Your Genetic Diabetes Risk
Genomepatri by MapmyGenome covers genetic predisposition to type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, and 100+ other health conditions. Includes certified genetic counselling to help you build a personalised prevention plan.
