The Spark: From Research to Real Impact
The entrepreneurial journey of Anu Acharya started in 2000 when she moved back to Hyderabad from Chicago. She founded Ocimum Bio Solutions — a company that helps scientists do their research. Over 14 years, Ocimum went through three acquisitions and two rounds of funding from Kubera Partners and the World Bank.
But for Anu, all that was great — but not enough.
“The real desire was to create an impact. To create a big impact you have to look at how you actually affect people directly. When you are working merely on the research side, you are working as a subcontractor to pharma companies. The process is long. So you are not directly impacting people. 2011: The Idea Takes Shape
Anu began exploring the idea of building something new in the genomics space. She floated the idea to the board to make MapmyGenome a subsidiary of Ocimum, but the board didn’t want a consumer-oriented venture deviating from Ocimum’s core mandate. Anu now considers that a blessing in disguise.
2013: MapmyGenome Is Born
MapmyGenome was incubated for two years, then launched as an independent company in 2013 with a singular mission: Better health for Indians through the power of genomics.
