What is SNP mapping and how does it work?
SNP stands for Single Nucleotide Polymorphism — tiny variations in your DNA sequence at specific positions. By analyzing hundreds of thousands of these SNPs, the test identifies which populations and geographic regions your DNA most closely resembles. These patterns are then compared against MapMyGenome's reference database of 20,000+ Indian records and global populations to generate your ancestry profile.
Can I use this test to find relatives?
Genomepatri Heritage reveals ancestral migration patterns and shared DNA percentages with world populations, which can give you a sense of ethnic relatedness. However, direct relative matching (identifying specific individuals you share DNA with) is not a feature of the Heritage test. For family tree building, you can upgrade to Whole Genome Sequencing, which includes ancestral family tree construction.
How is Genomepatri Heritage different from 23andMe or AncestryDNA?
Genomepatri Heritage is built specifically for Indian ancestry, while 23andMe and AncestryDNA use reference panels that heavily underrepresent South Asian populations. MapMyGenome's proprietary database contains 20,000+ Indian subpopulation records, enabling the identification of specific Indian ethnicities, regional groups, and tribal ancestries that global tests cannot resolve. It is also processed entirely in India under NABL accreditation.
What is the difference between Genomepatri Heritage and Whole Genome Sequencing?
Genomepatri Heritage uses SNP-based array analysis to determine ancestry composition and is optimized specifically for ethnicity mapping. Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) reads your entire DNA sequence and includes all Heritage features plus ancestral family tree building, deeper migration analysis, and carrier status for genetic conditions. Heritage is the ideal starting point; WGS is for those who want the deepest possible genetic insight.
What does the NABL accreditation mean?
NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) is India's highest standard of laboratory accreditation, overseen by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). A NABL-accredited lab follows internationally recognized quality standards for testing, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and consistency of results. MapMyGenome's laboratory holds NABL accreditation, giving you clinical-grade confidence in your ancestry results.
Is my genetic data safe and private?
Yes. MapMyGenome follows strict data confidentiality protocols. Your sample is processed in an NABL-accredited laboratory in India. Your genetic data is never sold to third parties and is not shared without your explicit consent. You can review the full privacy policy and data confidentiality policy on the MapMyGenome website.
