10 Ways to Defend Yourself Against Covid-19 (Coronavirus)

10 Ways to Defend Covid-19

The virus travels without a passport or a visa. With testing highly regulated and restricted in most countries, the best way is to not panic, build your defence, and continue to live your life. Here’s how.

Who Is Most at Risk?

The highest fatality rates are among individuals aged 80 and above, those with compromised immune systems, and people with pre-existing conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease. That said, deaths have occurred in younger individuals too — so everyone benefits from strengthening their immune system.

10 Things You Can Do Right Now

  1. Don’t smoke: ACE2 receptors — the entry point for the virus — are more expressed in smokers

  2. Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity is a risk factor for many conditions. Understanding your genetic makeup can help guide your approach

  3. Eat a colourful diet: A diet full of vegetables and fruits provides natural nutrients that build your immune system

  4. Sleep is the best medicine: 7–9 hours of sleep equips you with more immunity than almost anything else. Scientific evidence shows sleep improves immune response to infection

  5. Keep calm and carry on: Stress is linked to a plethora of clinical conditions and can suppress immune function. Remember: “Don’t worry, be happy”

  6. Exercise is therapy: Walking and breathing exercises (Pranayam) can certainly help. Try deep breathing for 3–5 minutes — breathe in through your nose for a count of 5, hold, breathe out through your mouth for a count of 5

  7. Maintain good hygiene: Wash your hands regularly and cover your mouth while sneezing or coughing

  8. Practice social distancing: Avoid large gatherings. Use the time to read, write, or catch up on rest

  9. Supplement your diet: Add Zinc, Vitamin C, D, and E — especially if you have a genetic predisposition to low levels. Consult a doctor before supplementing

  10. Channelise your inner OCD: Routinely clean all frequently touched surfaces — countertops, sinks, seating, workstations, and doorknobs
