World Kidney Day

World Kidney Day is a global awareness campaign aimed at raising awareness of the importance of our kidneys and reducing the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide.

Why Kidneys Matter

The kidneys are remarkable organs — each about the size of a fist — that perform several vital functions: filtering waste products and excess fluids from the blood, regulating blood pressure, producing hormones that control red blood cell production, and maintaining the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance. Each kidney contains about one million tiny filtering units called nephrons.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects approximately 10% of the global population — and most people don’t know they have it until it is advanced. CKD is defined as abnormalities of kidney structure or function, present for more than 3 months. The most common causes are diabetes and hypertension, both of which have significant genetic components.

The Genetic Angle

Genetic factors play an important role in kidney disease susceptibility. Variants in genes including APOL1, UMOD, and SHROOM3 are associated with increased risk of CKD. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) — one of the most common inherited kidney disorders — is caused by mutations in the PKD1 or PKD2 genes. Understanding your genetic risk for kidney disease allows you to take targeted preventive action through diet, lifestyle, and medical surveillance.

Prevention Tips

  • Stay well hydrated — drink 8–10 glasses of water daily

  • Maintain a healthy blood pressure and blood sugar level

  • Eat a balanced diet low in salt and processed foods

  • Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight

  • Avoid overuse of painkillers and NSAIDs

  • Get regular kidney function tests if you have diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of kidney disease
