Keto? Paleo? Vegan? What’s the BEST Diet?
Scientists, nutritionists, corporations, food companies, marketing firms, medical doctors and even philosophers have taken a swing at answering the question: What foods are right for ME? History can attest to the fact that, for the most part, all we’ve done so far is shoot an arrow in the dark and hope it lands in the vicinity of the target.
A Brief History of Diet Fads
When humankind first appeared on this planet, we were hunters and gatherers. At about 10,000 BC, the agricultural revolution changed everything. Then in 1820, Lord Byron introduced the first ever “diet plan” — his famous starch, water, and vinegar diet. By 1863, Banting published the “Letter on Corpulence” — probably the first documented reference to an obese society — and created a low-carb diet to tackle it.
The 1900s brought the Inuit diet (loads of blubber, meats, and raw fish — the first keto?), calorie counting, and even the “Cigarette diet” marketed by a tobacco company. The mid-1900s gave us the Grapefruit diet, WeightWatchers, and liquid protein shakes. The 90s championed “high carbs, low fat.” The 2000s swung to high protein with Atkins and Dukan. Then came Paleo in 2010, and Keto shortly thereafter.
Every diet that became a fad must have worked for someone. But humankind has been looking at food wrong the whole time.
The Most Important Part of a Good Diet Plan Isn’t Carbs, Protein, or Fat. It’s YOU.
We all process foods differently. What works for one doesn’t necessarily work for the other. Your DNA, blood and body metrics, gut microbiome, metabolic function, heart rate — all of it makes you unique. And creates the perfect roadmap to the kind of foods you should eat.
Advances in biotechnology have allowed us to look deeper into ourselves, read the blueprint of our being — our DNA — and conceive the human body as an integrated system. This is the approach taken by nutrigenomics: understanding how your unique genetic makeup determines how you respond to different foods, macronutrients, and dietary patterns.
Food has the power to transform lives, one plate at a time — provided you follow the nutritional blueprint your biology craves.
This is the era of nutrigenomics. This is the era of YOU.
