Even Miracles Take a Little Time: Conceive to Believe!
Planning a child takes more than a fairy godmother these days. This miracle of conception needs a lot going for itself. Here’s what a modern Cinderella needs to do to conceive without a magic spell:
Schedule a preconception visit
Consider genetic carrier screening
Take folic acid supplements
Give up social drinking
Eat healthy
Reduce caffeine intake
Aim for a healthy weight and exercise regularly
Eat Right
Folic acid: Start before you conceive — it lowers the chances of neural tube defects. Leafy green vegetables and whole grains are good sources
Limit junk: Reduce refined sugars and white flour. Higher fat levels also cause severe pregnancy nausea and vomiting
The right diet: Increase green leafies, salads, fruits, whole grains, and low-fat dairy
Don’t skip meals: Work out a three-meal habit now so that when baby arrives, it gets a steady supply of nutrients throughout the day
Exercise Wisely
Running: Excellent activity, but not the time to train for a marathon — that would strain your body and could interfere with your menstrual cycle
Swimming: Low impact but tones muscles and offers cardiovascular benefits. Avoid triathlon training
Yoga: Ideal before pregnancy — builds strength, balance, endurance, and muscle tone, and helps you relax
Track Your Fertile Window
Pregnancy is only possible during the five days before ovulation through to the day of ovulation — the “fertile window.” The probability of pregnancy increases gradually until the two days before ovulation and the day of it. These dates can be discussed with your gynaecologist and tracked using fertility apps like Ovia or Glow.
