Press Release: MapmyGenome Launches Babymap Carrier and Newborn Screening

Hyderabad, May 17, 2016

MapmyGenome India launched a carrier and newborn screening test called Babymap™ on May 16, 2016. Recommended for newborns, expecting parents, and people planning a pregnancy, this test screens for 71+ metabolic conditions that can be treated in newborns.

“Pregnancy and parenthood are among the most joyful experiences in a person’s life. We want to make these experiences healthy and tension-free. Babymap allows parents to make informed choices to ensure their newborns and future children stay healthy.” — Anu Acharya, CEO, MapmyGenome

Dr. Radha Rama Devi, MD (Peds) at Rainbow Hospital, who was instrumental in setting up the first Newborn Screening for preventable causes of mental retardation in India, said: “Babymap is an excellent idea and will replace the newborn screening tests currently used.”

The Babymap test requires blood samples for genetic testing using Next Generation Sequencing for over 31,000 pathogenic single nucleotide variants and minor insertions and deletions. Following analysis, a session with MapmyGenome genetic counsellors allows parents to learn about their carrier status and future course of action.
