Real People with Mutant Superpowers That Would Put the X-Men to Shame – Part 3 of 3

The final instalment of our series on real-life genetic superheroes. Catch up on Part 1 and Part 2 first!

The Sleepless Elite — Short Sleep Gene

Most humans need 7–9 hours of sleep per night. But a small group of people — the “Sleepless Elite” — function perfectly on just 4–6 hours, thanks to a rare mutation in the DEC2 gene (also known as BHLHE41). These individuals wake up naturally after a few hours, feeling fully refreshed, and suffer no cognitive impairment from their short sleep. Scientists estimate this mutation affects less than 3% of the population. If you’re one of them, you’ve essentially been gifted an extra 2–3 hours of productive time every day for your entire life.

The Fingerprint-Free Mutation — Adermatoglyphia

Every criminal’s dream: a rare genetic condition called adermatoglyphia — also known as “immigration delay disease” — in which individuals are born without fingerprints. Caused by a mutation in the SMARCAD1 gene, this condition has been identified in only four families worldwide. Affected individuals have smooth fingertips with no ridge patterns — making fingerprint-based identification impossible. The condition is otherwise harmless, though it can cause complications at border crossings and biometric identification systems.

Ozzy Osbourne — The Genetic Anomaly

And finally — Ozzy Osbourne. The Prince of Darkness had his genome sequenced in 2010, and the results baffled scientists. Ozzy carries several genetic variants never before seen in humans — including mutations that affect his metabolism of alcohol and drugs, his immune system, and his neurological function. Scientists believe these unique variants may explain how Ozzy survived decades of extreme substance use that would have killed most people. His genome has been described as “a mosaic of Neanderthal and other ancient human DNA.” As Ozzy himself put it: “I am a medical miracle.”
