The Promise of Genomics to Science and Society: Part 1 of 3

Genomics — the study of an organism’s complete set of DNA, including all of its genes — is one of the most transformative scientific developments of our time. In this three-part series, we explore the promise of genomics to science and society: what it has already delivered, what it is delivering today, and what it promises for the future.

The Foundation: From Mendel to the Human Genome Project

The story of genomics begins with Gregor Mendel’s pea plant experiments in the 1860s, which established the basic principles of heredity. It continued through the discovery of the DNA double helix by Watson, Crick, Franklin, and Wilkins in 1953, and culminated — for now — in the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003.

The Human Genome Project was a landmark achievement: a 13-year, $3 billion international effort to sequence the entire human genome — all 3 billion base pairs of DNA that make up the human genetic blueprint. It was the biological equivalent of landing on the moon. And like the moon landing, it opened up an entirely new frontier of exploration.

What Has Genomics Delivered So Far?

  • Disease gene discovery — thousands of genes associated with hereditary diseases have been identified, enabling genetic testing and counselling for conditions from cystic fibrosis to hereditary breast cancer

  • Pharmacogenomics — understanding how genetic variants influence drug response has enabled more personalised prescribing, reducing adverse drug reactions and improving treatment efficacy

  • Newborn screening — genetic screening of newborns for treatable conditions has saved thousands of lives and prevented disability

  • Forensic science — DNA fingerprinting has revolutionised criminal investigation and exoneration of the wrongly convicted

  • Ancestry and population genetics — genomics has transformed our understanding of human migration, evolution, and the genetic diversity of our species
