The QR Code

QR code requirement for Dubai travel

The QR Code

QR codes — those square, pixelated barcodes you scan with your phone — became one of the most important tools of the COVID-19 pandemic era. From restaurant menus to vaccine certificates to COVID test reports, QR codes enabled contactless, verifiable, and tamper-proof information sharing at a time when trust and accuracy were critical.

What Is a QR Code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that can store a large amount of information — including URLs, text, and data — that can be read instantly by a smartphone camera. Unlike traditional barcodes that store data in one direction, QR codes store data in both horizontal and vertical directions, allowing them to hold significantly more information.

QR Codes and COVID-19 Test Reports

As international travel resumed during the pandemic, many countries and airlines required COVID-19 RT-PCR test certificates with QR codes to verify the authenticity of test results. Dubai’s health authority (DHA) was among the first to mandate QR-coded COVID reports — enabling border authorities to scan and verify results directly from the issuing laboratory’s system, preventing fraud and ensuring traveller safety.

MapmyGenome was among the first laboratories in India to implement QR-coded COVID-19 reports, enabling its customers to travel to Dubai and other QR-code-requiring destinations with confidence.

QR Codes Beyond COVID

QR codes are now widely used in healthcare for patient identification, medication management, medical records access, and laboratory report verification — improving accuracy, efficiency, and patient safety across the healthcare system.
