Marathon Training: Six Tips From Our Fitness Experts
The Genome Mappers at MapmyGenome trained hard for a 10-km run at Hyderabad. Some were beginners; others were regular exercisers. Here are six expert tips that helped build stronger athletes in our team — and can help you too.
1. Consistency Is Everything
Whether you run 5 km twice a week or 10 km on weekends, you will not get fit unless you work out regularly. Consistency cannot be compromised.
2. Always Push for More
Completing a 10-km run doesn’t mean you’ll always be able to do it. Add an extra 2–3 km occasionally to increase fitness and cardio capacity. Mix in intervals of jogging and brisk walking to keep it challenging.
3. Manage All Your Muscles
Don’t forget to stretch and relax. Hamstrings, glutes, and quads need attention — but so does your whole body. Incorporate conditioning exercises, meditation, and basic yoga asanas into your training schedule.
4. Train with People Who Care About Fitness
You will do more and do better when you train with people who are serious about fitness. Find a training buddy who can share what worked for them.
5. Fuel Smart with Smoothies
Smoothies are a delicious way to replenish lost nutrients. Use the combination that works best for you — protein powder, fruits, vegetables, nuts, yoghurt, seeds — and experiment to find your ideal recovery blend.
6. Invest in the Right Shoes
A solid pair of running shoes with good soles is non-negotiable. They protect your feet, reduce ankle and knee injuries, and are built for long-term use.
Train Smarter with Your DNA
A genetic variant in your DNA can reveal whether you have natural power, endurance, or a combination of both. Myfitgene by MapmyGenome gives you a personalised fitness blueprint — so you can train in a way that works with your biology, not against it.
