Takeaways From a Champion’s Routine — Eliud Kipchoge

Eliud Kipchoge — the Kenyan marathon runner who shattered his own world record with a time of 2:01:09 at the Berlin Marathon — is widely regarded as the greatest marathon runner of all time. After crossing the finish line, he had time to hug his trainer, pose for photos, and wave the Kenyan flag before the second-place runner finished, four minutes and 49 seconds later. Unbelievable.

Kipchoge’s Training Philosophy

Kipchoge believes in good rest. He takes three to four weeks of rest before starting a three-to-four week preparatory phase. His workout routine is a mix of one-hour strength exercises and step aerobics with an hour of easy running the next. He doesn’t believe in extreme training — he sticks to a hard-easy approach, running fast three days a week with the rest at a slow pace.

A Standard Week of Kipchoge’s Training

  • Monday: 12 miles easy (6am) + 6 miles easy (4pm)

  • Tuesday: Track workout — 9–10 miles of speed at marathon pace (e.g. 8 × 1,600m in 4:40 with 2 min recovery) + 6 miles easy (4pm)

  • Wednesday: 12 miles easy + 60 min strength and mobility + 6 miles easy

  • Thursday: 19 or 25-mile long run (alternating weeks)

  • Friday: 12 miles easy + 60 min strength and mobility + 6 miles easy

  • Saturday: Fartlek (13 × 3 min fast / 1 min jog) + 6 miles easy

  • Sunday: 2 hours easy

What We Can Learn

Kipchoge’s success is built on consistency, discipline, and recovery — not extreme training. His approach mirrors what sports genetics tells us: sustainable, periodised training that respects your body’s recovery capacity outperforms high-volume, high-intensity approaches for most athletes.
